That made me start thinking about the "sacrificed to Hell" parallels and I kind of like the idea that hell is shame, which weighs on the men so heavily--Macey who feels like he's letting his mates down, Thomas Rowley who keeps getting bullied by the other men, and Tom who feels fragile and (unfairly) sexually humiliated.
